"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." - Preamble to the United States Constitution.
The first assault weapon.
I'm going to attempt to not get political about this. I love discussing gun control, because there are a lot of good points being made from both sides, and I haven't heard all of them. I just want to remind everyone that society will never be perfect. Regardless of whether or not the government makes obtaining a gun so difficult that it's essentially impossible, society as a whole will not see a huge shift in one direction or the other. I do however, think that gun control is an excellent example of the cost of freedom.
Human beings are like horses, and the government is like the rancher. If you keep horses in a stable all the time, they'll be fairly protected, have food and water provided for them, and be at the will of the rancher. The thing is that horses don't actually like being stuck in a stable all day. Horses love to run. If the horses are allowed to run wild they might become the target of predators. They'll eat the grass around them and not be stuck eating whatever the ranchers provided for them.
There's a risk that comes with being let out of the stable. You just have to ask yourself whether or not you're willing to take that risk to stretch your legs.
To put it into more relatable terms, what if the Federal government outlawed four-wheelers because they deemed them to be dangerous? People love riding around on those things, regardless of how dangerous they might be. We do things that pose a risk to our health and safety all the time for a number of reasons.
This is Greg's guide to telling whether or not you like big or small government. If you think that the government should keep their noses out of it and let us decide for ourselves whether or not we're dumb enough or not to put ourselves in danger all the time with four-wheelers and guns and large cups of soda, you're for a smaller government. If you think the populous is too ignorant and needs to be hold how to live, you're for big government.
I pretty much failed. That got political.
